My Lady Notorious A Mallorean Novel Jo Beverley 9780451206442 Books

Set in the late 18th century (1761 from the context of the story), this tells of Lady Chastity Ware, who with her widowed sister, Verity, is on the run from her father and Verity’s brother-in-law, who want Verity’s child and to force the sisters into unwanted marriages. Verity would have the man she loves and Chastity, having been ruined by her father, will have no one.

In need of money, Chastity dresses as a man and stops a coach on the road. But the man she robs and forces to drive the carriage is Cyn Malloren, a veteran of the Battle of Louisbourg in Quebec (which took place in 1758) and the brother of the ruthless Marquess of Rothgar. Cyn, recovered from his war wounds, now wants adventure. When he realizes he’s been captured by a woman, disguised as a man, he is intrigued and decides to cooperate.

They only know each other for a few days when Cyn is lusting after Chastity (still disguised as a man) and thinking of marriage. When he realizes she is the ruined Lady Chastity Ware, neither his lust nor his intentions toward her change. It seemed unbelievable and a bit rushed to me. As one reviewer said: “Nowhere do I see any convincing falling in love, just sexual attraction.” Add to that Beverly’s inclusion of an orgy with the bawdy jokes to go with it and the story seemed to be headed in a bizarre direction. The ending, while clearly a set up for the series, had some great dialog and action, worth waiting for.

Beverly writes well, no doubt of it, but I did not find the story compelling. It was difficult to rate. The writing is great but the story disappointed. There are some references to historical incidents that are going on in the background, adding authenticity, but we don’t see that action. As a heroine, Chastity seems clueless, doing very stupid things over and over. Cyn is amusing and, at times, brave but not nearly as intriguing as his brother, Rothgar.

All in all, it’s a Georgian romp with some great dialog but also some improbable elements. Still, fans of Beverly will no doubt love it.

My Lady Notorious A Mallorean Novel Jo Beverley 9780451206442 Books Reviews

A well-done and well-developed romance. H/h and families interesting and believable, with lovingly described details of Georgian dress and customs. A fine vacation from current events. Looking forward to the next in the series.
This was the first romance novel that I ever read and it is a delight in every way. Because of this, and of course the rest of the Malloren series, I have been enjoying romance ever since and regret that I didn't know some of this stuff when I was with my ex-boyfriend. I deeply appreciate and give thanks to Jo Beverly as I re-read this series now upon hearing of her passing this Monday May 24, 2016. My Blessings and Love to her, her family and friends. I will miss her but she lives on in her stories.
This 1st book in the Malloren Series by Jo Beverley includes gender bending, cross-dressing, seduction, and adventure. What a combination! Though the first quarter of the book is slow-moving if you are patient you will see it is only the beginning of a very multi-layered and enjoyable tale.
We are first introduced to Cyn Malloren as his carriage is hijacked by Lady Chastity Ware dressed a highwayman. Desperate to help her widowed sister and baby escape the man intent on taking her child from her, she resorts to thievery in order to aid her sister's plight.
However, Cyn is bored and wishing for adventure and is a willing victim. Immediately noting "Charlie" is not truly a man he is intrigued and willing to go along for the ride.
We are introduced several times to the head of the Malloren Family, Rothgar, a charismatic man who is both bold and one we find dipping in the snuff quite a bit! What might be a major flaw in the story is the very overshadowing of the hero Cyn by his more intriguing brother. There is no fault in the character build up of Lady Chastity who proves to be both passionate and a victim of her father's cruelty, however Cyn comes across as a much lighter version of his brother. Rothgar had a previous tryst (although fairly innocent) with Lady Chastity and there seems to actually be a rather deep connection between the two of them.
The much talked about LADY NOTORIOUS, the 1st book in Jo Beverley's Malloren Series, was not at all as I expected. Perhaps a book and series with such a reputation must perform immediate miracles or one is disappointed. Rest assured, this book picks-up
tempo quite swiftly mid-way and was indeed a joy to read. The sensual scenes becoming quite explicit, and due to the beginning being a rather slow and innocent tale, you can see that Ms. Beverley has merely played you into her talented hands. The story engulfs you in it's fun, depth, and layers.
The 2nd book in the Malloren Series, TEMPTING FORTUNE, tells the story of Lord Arcenbryght Malloren and Portia St. Claire.
It's the late 1700s and nobly born Chastity Ware has escaped, for the time being, from her dysfunctional and warped father. She and her sister--who is both newly delivered of a baby and newly widowed--are in hiding. Chastity, a bold young woman made bolder by difficult circumstances, dresses like a highwayman (her father conveniently shaved her head a month ago) and accosts an elegant coach, hoping for plunder to move herself and her sister to better circumstances. The owner of the coach is the dashing Cyn Malloren, and as things unfold, he ascertains Chastity's masquerade and begins falling in love with her -- with her none the wiser. This is a fast paced romp with lots of sex. What it lacks in plot refinement (the two main characters don't ever have any serious and meaningful conversations to indicate a growing bond of love) it makes up for in authenticity of time period, vocabulary and terminology, and rising action. I save the 5-star ratings for the books that leave me speechless. This was lots of fun.
