AFTER DARK is the first book in the Harmony series of futuristic stories that take place on the earth colony of Harmony. The nice thing about this book is that A reader is never overwhelmed with the details of the world. A reader of the series will learn how detailed this imagined world is but a reader is never taken away from the story in order to provide endless details about this world. Harmony was founded when a Curtain opened between Earth and Harmony. Once colonists went to Harmony, the Curtain unexpectedly closed standing the colonists. Two hundred years later, humans have evolved into using various psychic talents.

This book is the story of Lydia Smith, a tangler who can manage psychic energy traps. She is at a low point in her life because she had a lost weekend where she was trapped underground and has no memory of what happened to her. She last her career and is now working at a low budget "museum"and trying to start get own consulting business. Her first client is Emmett London who is with her when she discovers a dead body. The two are soon in danger and are intensely attracted to one another.

I like this book. The book is funny as Lydia and Emmett frustrate one another in various ways. They begin by not training one another at all, but by the end of the book have learned to trust one another and work together.

I enjoyed their relationship. It is important to note, however, that they're story is unfinished as there is a sequel to this book, AFTER GLOW. I think alone this book would be vaguely unsatisfying because there is no resolution to the romance or to Lydia's personal story.

The creation of the dust bunnies was a stroke of genius. They are companion creatures that each have their own personalities. We don't see that much of Fuzz here, but the dust bunnies become more predominant in the later books and have their own fans.

Was attracted by the idea of exploring alien ruins. but found a formula romance. Very disappointed. Plot was fast and the back stories for the two main characters were professionally done. The mystery was ok.
Story line full of humor, sarcastic wit and mystery. Well worth the cost. Definitely one that will be added to my library.

Jayne Castle once again brings readers to Harmony with a thrilling mystery involving Lydia Smith and Emmet London and of course Fuzz their dust bunny companion! I'm looking forward to reading more of their adventures!
After Dark, another book written about the colonists on Harmony continues the saga of previous Jayne Castle futuristic series. For first readers, it might be to your advantage to read the preceeding novels to fully enjoy this one. I awaited this book with excitement but was disappointed to find the zesty romance scenes scaled down to two and the ending left hanging. I'm going to assume the Jayne will continue the relationship between Lydia and Emmett and hopefully, give us those sizzling sexual scenes we enjoy. There are a number of things I like about Jayne's books, one of which is that the women in her stories are not wishy-washy and not only use their brains but don't let themselves be dominated by the man all the time... the second thing I like is that she has great story lines and interesting plots, and of course, a steamy romance which really spices the whole book. It most cases these 3 items create a great romance book. After Dark fell short in the romance department and so I'm hoping she will correct this with the sequel which I'm sure is in the works now...
This is one of my favorite of Jayne's books, and I enjoyed re-reading it and remembering how much I enjoyed it. Jayne has created is a well-imagined world; full of the familiar and the exotic. And of course, it has dust bunnies! If you're looking for a book that is a unique blend of science fiction, suspense, romance, and humor, this is the book for you. Once you've read this you'll be ready for the rest of the books in this fabulous series.
Becoming accustomed to the strange terms took away some of the enjoyment in the story line. However the characters and their interactions kept me going until I settled into this new world. There is a good balance of action and romance. I look forward to book two in the series.
