I wish that I meant unbelievable in a good way. Nothing about this story is not a bad trope. I hit the 20% point and quit. This is, in the words from the Princess Bride, inconceivable. A romance that was forced into the story. A vaguely hidden betrayal that was obvious, and a main character who is lucky not skilled. Big time pass for me.Tags : The Emperor's Edge - Kindle edition by Lindsay Buroker. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. The Emperor Edge eBook Lindsay Buroker Reviews
I picked up this book because it was a free download. I get a fair amount of my reading material this way, so I've adjusted my expectations downward; there's a lot of mediocre writing and abysmal editing on the freebies list. So when I began reading The Emperor's Edge, I was very happily surprised to find a well-written story, with minimal editorial issues and characters I enjoyed getting to know. The heroine is clever and good-natured, the hero, though morally ambiguous in some ways, is intelligent and masterful at his craft, and the secondary characters are either fun, believable, or sympathetic. I found the plot engaging, the pacing rapid but measured (no cycle of zooming and slogging) and I was engaged by the conflict and invested in the outcome.
For those of you who are particular about it, there was no bad language; although there are scenes of physical violence, and some of them are gory, there was, in my opinion, no descent into nauseating detail. (I can't tell you how quickly I delete the books where the author lingers pruriently over every horrific aspect.) Also, there were no sex scenes, though it's clear that a deepening of the relationship lies ahead for the hero and heroine in future books. Personally, I found their chemistry to be far more believable and tantalizing than any amount of instant lust or "fated from the first glance" bosom-heaving.
Perhaps one of the things I liked most is that the characters, even the heroine, are fallible, but able to acknowledge their short-comings. One of the reasons I read, instead of watching television, is the mean-spiritedness, immaturity, and shallow criticism becoming so prevalent, not just on gossip-oriented programs, but from supposedly detached network newscasters. It was a pleasure to spend time in the company of characters who can cope with differences and disappointment; though there's some teasing, they don't get snide and belittling, and in a pinch, each of them offers their best. As a side note, the strategy of giving away the first book in a series was successful in my case; I've already bought the rest of the "Edge" stories.
The Emperor's Edge is an amazing read. I had trouble putting it down and finished it in two sittings. I think what really raises her above is the life she brings to her characters. I truly enjoy all of them.
The Emperor's Edge tells the story of a dedicated enforcer (police) whose dream is to become the highest ranking woman in the organization. Things never really work out the way they should though and she ends up a fugitive running from her former comrades still trying to protect her emperor. You would never expect an alcoholic professor, a gang member with magical talent, a male escort, and the deadliest assassin in the world to team up for anything, but that is what happens and it has amazing results. The book has some very humorous spots and is filled with action. I am amazed with Lindsay's ability with dialogue this is the second book of hers I have read (Goblin Brothers being the other) and the way the characters interact is an absolute joy.
If you enjoy fantasy novels do yourself a favor and check this book out. It is well worth the cost and hopefully we will be seeing a lot more of this crew.
ugh. i have no idea how i got this trilogy on my . i am a cheapskate. i only buy books that cost 99cents. maybe if it is a really good study (nonfic) book i'll pay full price. so to get a 3 book collection on my it must have been free or on sale. either way. i don't remember how i got i. i was bored and decided to actually read it. and i was hooked. books 4-9 are NOT 99cents. sigh. they are $5 and$6. sigh. i may actually buy a FICTION series for my .
why you say? um cuz it is that freaking good.
this story has soooooo many things i love.
1. plucky cute kickass heroine
2. a lil romance
3. witty repartee and just plain fun
4. a cool team full of characters that are different and all have their own complex stories that you can't wait to discover
5. adventure/action
6. a lil supernatural not a lot
7. different worlds and peoples but it doesn't take 6 chapters to explain the world the story is in.
8. redemption of the characters- they need forgiving/pardoning
9. Viva la revolución = government needs to change and they are helping to do it.
10. the books end with you knowing another adventure is about to take place but the ones in that novel are done and finished. you are not left with that kind of cliffhanger but more like "ok... this is about to happen and another layer of so and so's personality/past is going to be revealed in the next novel.
basically like a Joss Whedon tv show/film. a group of folks only with more depth and less witty repartee fighting for a cause. adventures ensue; missions fail/succeed. sometimes they are working with the govt; sometimes running from it but there intent is always for good. their world is not real but not so fantastical you need a separate book to understand it. just so good. so very good. sigh.
so i went and read the book summaries on for volumes 4-9. something i don't normally do since i read so much, blurbs/book covers by publishers always give too much away. but since i was like i am not buying them anytime soon i NEED to know what i am missing. that was a Mistake. i am actually contemplating spending $50 on these books. FICTION books!!! trust me when i tell you i do not buy fiction books. that is why God invented a library, used books, and sales on .
i am going to see if i have reward points on my credit card so i can get an gift card. i mean, it goes against everything in me to BUY fiction books i know i will only read once at full price. i just can't. so if anybody want to donate to the cause...inbox me. ;-)
